Brian Downie '73
Brian Downie, Class of 1973, was a four-year basketball letter winner at Poland High School and earned a college scholarship to the University of Delaware. As a senior, he received First Team MVCC honors and was named WYFM Athlete of the Month. He also competed in the Boardman Schoolboy Classic, the All-American Cage Classic, and the Hoyt Roundball Classic. Brian was the only Poland Seminary High School student in 1973 to be named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist.
At the University of Delaware, Brian played four years of basketball and served as team captain during his senior season. He earned All-Conference and Academic All-American honors and was selected MVP of the Bentley College Tournament as well as All-Tournament at the Charlotte (Davidson University) Invitational Tournament.
Brian graduated from Delaware in 1978 with honors in Civil Engineering and Political Science. He was a Rhodes Scholar Finalist and received an opportunity to play professional basketball in Europe. Instead, he chose to attend Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned his law degree in 1981.
