Baird Mitchell (1937)

Baird Mitchell was one of Poland High School’s greatest distance runners, excelling in track & field while also contributing in basketball.

In track & field, Mitchell was a two-time Ohio State Champion in the one-mile run and anchored Poland’s 1937 State Championship Mile Relay Team. He went undefeated in the mile run during both his junior and senior seasons and held the school record in the one-mile run until 1955. He was a County Champion and District Champion as both a junior and senior and also won the Salem Night Relays in both seasons.

In basketball, Mitchell earned a varsity letter during his senior year, adding to an outstanding high school athletic career highlighted by his dominance on the track.
