Ben Umbel '08

Ben Umbel, Class of 2008, was one of the most decorated basketball players in Poland Seminary High School history. A two-year starter for the Bulldogs from 2005–2008, Ben earned First Team All-MAC honors twice and was named MAC Player of the Year during the 2007–08 season. That same year, he was recognized as the Northeast Ohio Inland District Player of the Year and earned First Team All-Ohio honors. He was also selected to the North-South All-Star Game, named Channel 33 Student Athlete of the Week, and earned a spot on the Division II Final Four All-Tournament Team.

Ben established several school and state records during his career, including 176 steals in a season, 270 career steals, and 14 steals in a single game against Salem. His 176 steals in a season and 14 steals in a game also stand as Ohio state records.

After high school, Ben attended Baldwin Wallace University, where he earned a degree in Biology while continuing his basketball career as a starter during his junior and senior seasons. He later attended the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) in Blacksburg, Virginia, to pursue medical school. Ben and his wife, Amy, reside in Columbus, Ohio, with their golden doodle, Fitzhenry, where Ben is completing his orthopedic surgery residency with OhioHealth.
