Charles Zelenika '39

Charles Zelenika, Class of 1939, was an outstanding three-year basketball letterman who helped establish Poland High School as one of the area's premier basketball programs.

During the 1938 season, Charles led the Bulldogs to their first Mahoning County Championship and District Class B Championship. That team also set a school record with a 17–4 record, marking one of the most successful seasons in school history.

As a senior in 1939, Charles helped Poland capture another Mahoning County Championship, finishing the season with an impressive 15–7 record.

Renowned for his exceptional play at guard, Charles earned high praise from legendary coach Clark C. White, who described him as "the best back guard I ever coached." His leadership, skill, and contributions made him one of the outstanding basketball players in Poland High School history.
