Dick Davis '47

Dick Davis, Class of 1947, was one of Poland High School’s greatest track and field athletes and a three-year basketball letterman. As a sophomore in 1944, he finished fifth in the state in the high hurdles while earning District Championships in both the high and low hurdles and a County Championship in the high hurdles.

In 1945, Davis placed second in the state in both the high and low hurdles. He captured County and District Championships in both events while setting a County record in the high hurdles and a District record in the low hurdles.

After returning from Navy service for his senior season in 1947, Davis led Poland to the State Class B Championship. At the state meet, he finished second in the high hurdles, second in the low hurdles, fourth in the long jump, and anchored the fourth-place mile relay team. He won District Championships in the high hurdles, low hurdles, long jump, and mile relay, while also setting records in both hurdle events and the relay. Davis led Poland to County and District Championships and helped the team win the Zanesville Y Bridge Relays, capturing titles in the high hurdles, low hurdles, and long jump.
