Dan Smolan '53

Dan Smolan, Class of 1953, was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Poland High School, lettering in football, basketball, and track.

In football, Dan earned a varsity letter as a freshman and went on to become a four-year letterman. He received All-County honors during both his junior and senior seasons and scored 10 touchdowns as a senior. His accomplishments earned him a full football scholarship to the University of Cincinnati.

In basketball, Dan was a three-year varsity letterman. During his senior season, he finished as the team's second-leading scorer and leading rebounder.

In track, Dan earned three varsity letters, competing in the shot put and discus. He was also a member of the 880-yard relay team that established a county record.

Beyond high school athletics, Dan also played on the Poland Polo Team, beginning at age 14. He competed for five years and became the team's leading scorer, showcasing his athletic versatility across multiple sports.
