Don Weyer '52

Don Weyer, Class of 1952, was a three-sport standout at Poland High School. He played four years of football and still holds the school record for the longest fumble return (98 yards). In basketball, he was a four-year letter winner and earned a full scholarship to Youngstown State University, where he played from 1952 to 1954. In track & field, Don competed for four years, lettering in five events: the high hurdles, low hurdles, shot put, discus, and high jump.

Following his athletic career, Don served as a firefighter for the Poland Fire Department for 22 years, retiring as Battalion Chief. He was a past President of the Poland Firemen’s Association, a member of the Sarasota Sertoma Club, Elks Lodge #2495 in Sarasota, Florida, and the Building Managers International of Florida. From 1955 to 1957, Don was also recognized as the nation’s tallest race car driver.
