George Barton

George Barton is honored in the Poland High School Hall of Fame for his outstanding contributions to both the athletic and academic programs at Poland. He first attended Ohio State University in 1915 on a baseball scholarship as a pitcher and later earned his degree from Ohio University in 1923. Before coming to Poland, he taught and coached basketball at Boardman.

In 1929, Barton came to Poland as principal and head basketball coach. He also played a vital role in developing the school's track & field and football programs, serving as track coach while supporting the growth of football. In 1933, his responsibilities expanded when he also became the school's superintendent.

Under Barton's leadership, Baird Mitchell Stadium was completed in 1937, featuring one of the finest track surfaces in the region. His efforts helped make Poland the host site for county track meets for many years. In 1944, he helped establish the community's 11-man football program.

In 1952, Barton supported the addition of football field lights, making Saturday afternoon football a tradition at the stadium. He faithfully served the Poland School District from 1929 to 1954, providing steady leadership and leaving a lasting impact on the development of Poland's athletic and educational programs.
