T. Hill McDonald was a dedicated coach and contributor who played a vital role in the development of athletics at Poland High School from 1936 to 1950.
In football, he coached Poland to the six-man Mahoning County Class B Championship in 1941. His six-man football teams compiled an 11–6–1 record from 1941–1943. McDonald also established Poland's first continuous 11-man football team in 1944, opening the season with a 13–0 victory over Goshen.
In track and field, he was responsible for designing the Stagger System for the new Seminary Athletic Field in 1937. He also served as Clerk of Course for Poland's Seminary Relays from 1937 to 1942, one of the area's premier Class B track meets, and later worked as assistant track coach under Charles Stone.
During World War II, McDonald helped keep Poland's athletic programs active. He also served as junior varsity basketball coach, freshman football coach, varsity tennis coach, baseball coach, and cheerleading coach, contributing across multiple sports.
Beyond coaching, McDonald was a charter member of the Poland Booster Club (1944) and later served as its president, leaving a lasting impact on Poland High School athletics.
