Dr. Lawrence Burkert

Dr. Lawrence Burkert was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Poland High School, competing in football, track, and basketball. In football, he earned Honorable Mention All-Tri County honors as a junior and First Team All-Tri County recognition as a senior. He also set a school record by scoring 13 touchdowns in a single season during his senior year.

After high school, Burkert attended Mount Union College, where he played football from 1957 to 1961 and was elected team captain in 1961. He was also a member of the track team in 1957.

Academically, he was equally distinguished. At Mount Union, he served as Class President in 1960 and 1961, made the Dean's List from 1957–1961, was President of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, received the Thomas A. Clark Award (ATO National Award), graduated as class salutatorian, and earned Summa Cum Laude honors in 1961. He then attended Case Western Reserve University from 1961–1965.

Dr. Burkert completed his medical training at Milwaukee County General Hospital (1965–1968 and 1972–1973) and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1969–1972. He became board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Oncology and served as Chief of Staff at Elmbrook Memorial Hospital from 1981 to 1983. He is also a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American College of Physicians.
