Marian Mim McDonald '33

Marian "Mim" McDonald, Class of 1933, was both an outstanding athlete and a pioneering coach in Poland athletics.

As a player, Mim was a three-year starter on the girls' basketball team. In 1931, her team completed an undefeated season. She also excelled in tennis, competing in doubles with Helen Mitchell, sister of Baird Mitchell. Together, they won the Mill Creek Park Girls' Doubles Championship for two consecutive years.

While attending The College of Wooster, Mim became the second woman inducted into the Wooster College Athletic Hall of Fame. She was recognized as an outstanding athlete in both basketball and tennis and served as head of the Women's Sports Association.

As an educator and coach, McDonald taught in the Poland Schools from 1937 to 1972. She founded the Girls' Athletic Association (GAA) at Poland and introduced "play days" with neighboring schools as an alternative to interscholastic basketball, helping expand opportunities for girls' athletics. She also organized after-school basketball and volleyball programs for 7th, 8th, and 9th grade girls.

When she became principal of Poland Middle School, Mim additionally served as the cheerleader advisor and coached Poland's first varsity girls' basketball team when the program began in 1970, leaving a lasting legacy in girls' athletics.
