Mark S. Covell

Mark S. Covell, a 1979 graduate of Poland High School, played offensive guard and earned Second Team All-Mahoning Valley Conference honors during his senior season. He received his Bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University in 1984, where he served as a football equipment manager. He later earned a Master of Education from Ashland University in 1993 and became a doctoral candidate at Youngstown State University.

Although he played for legendary coach David Pavlansky, Mark is best known for his outstanding coaching career. He began coaching at Poland Middle School in 1984, then spent seven years as an assistant football coach and teacher at Lisbon David Anderson High School before returning to his alma mater in 1992.

At Poland Seminary High School, Mark served as an assistant football coach, spending most of his tenure as Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator under coaches Mike Simington, Reid Lamport, Rick Shepas, and Paul Hulea. During his time on the coaching staff, Poland won six league championships and qualified for the state playoffs in 1993, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2002. His most notable achievement came in 1999, when he served as Defensive Coordinator for Poland's 15–0 Ohio State Championship football team.
