Coach Mel Klingler

Coach Mel Klingler graduated from Youngstown Woodrow Wilson High School in 1955, where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He attended Youngstown College, playing baseball while earning his degree in education in 1960, later completing a master's degree in secondary education administration from Westminster College and pursuing postgraduate studies at Kent State University.

Klingler began his teaching and coaching career at United High School in 1960, then coached at North Lima High School from 1965–1969 before becoming head football coach at Crestview High School in 1969. He came to Poland High School in 1973, serving as the Bulldogs' head assistant football coach and defensive coordinator under Dave Pavlansky while also leading the baseball program through 1979. In 1979, he became Poland's head football coach, a position he held until 1984, before returning as an assistant baseball coach in 1992.

Beyond coaching, Klingler developed Poland's Occupational Work Experience Program and was recognized by the state as Coordinator of the Year. He also served on the State OWECA Council and was an active leader in the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association, including serving as its president. He retired in 1997, concluding an outstanding 37-year career in education and coaching.
