Robert Johnston

Robert Johnston was an exceptional track and basketball athlete at Poland High School, earning recognition as one of the school's greatest throwers.

In track and field, Robert was a two-time Ohio State Champion in the discus and a three-year letterman. He remained undefeated in the discus during his junior and senior seasons. His throw of 151 feet, 9 inches established a Poland High School record that stood for many years. He also set a State Meet record of 155 feet, 6.5 inches, which remained unbeaten for 15 years, and established another record at the Mansfield Relays. As a junior, he held the Ohio state record using the heavier discus, and as a senior, recorded the best discus throw in the state. Following his outstanding high school career, Robert competed in track and field at The Ohio State University.

In basketball, Robert was a two-year letterman and helped lead Poland to the 1938 and 1939 County Championship teams, contributing to the school's success in one of its strongest basketball eras.
